As part of the CANA Refresh initiative, we tested a new proposal for couples last June: CAVA Adventure!
This dynamic, outdoor format allows couples to experience a true adventure in just 48 hours! Always on the move, participants enjoy hikes, concise teachings, practical workshops, sharing groups, quality time as a couple, relaxation, reconciliation, and celebration.
All of this follows a framework with 4 stages:
- Love: transitioning from “the other for me” to “me for the other”
- Cultivating joy in the couple
- Learning to manage conflicts in the relationship and reconcile
- Discerning as a couple and welcoming the Holy Spirit
About thirty of us took part in this experience, which mostly appealed to couples aged 25 to 40. The stunning setting around the Abbey of Hautecombe and the challenges posed by the weather (a massive storm on the first night!) did not stop the couples from enjoying an unforgettable weekend. The highlight was undoubtedly a time of reconciliation at the foot of the cross overlooking Lake Bourget, followed by a wonderful celebration at the abbey’s inn.
We hope this concept will attract young couples for whom leaving the children for an entire week is challenging, making it a more accessible step in the Cana universe before they are able to commit to a full Cana Week. This is also a replicable and adaptable concept in locations suited for adventure. Starting next October, it will be introduced at Le Reposoir, a community chalet in Haute-Savoie, and then in other locations by the end of the year. Tools will also be developed to help you launch this initiative in your area!
Some feedback from couples after the weekend:
“Great retreat, I especially enjoyed the exercises. This weekend helped increase our communication in the relationship, both in listening and expressing things.”
“Practical tools to communicate better; a simple prayer to reflect on the day and care for each other as a couple each evening.”
“Choosing to place our relationship under God’s guidance. A time for us, with no other concerns.”
