During the CANA referents’ week in Berlin, we discovered that there is a special link between Mission CANA and the city of Berlin, linked to recent German history and the country’s reunification.
The first CANA week in Germany took place in 1989 in the still-divided city of Berlin, just a few months before the fall of the Wall. The fall of the Wall had been preceded in East Germany by the so-called “peaceful revolution”, a movement that began mainly in East German Protestant churches with prayers and rallies. At the same time, the first CANA week in Germany was taking place in West Berlin, with Sister Ruth Lagemann also taking part. In the video, she recounts the prayer for unity near the wall and the events of this period of upheaval.
