Three years ago, Southern Germany hosted a CANA weekend once again, the first in a very long time. This initiative, born of a fresh outpouring of the Spirit, recently gathered couples from all over the country for its third edition around a profound theme: the family of origin.
For many years, CANA’s presence in Southern Germany rested on a small fraternity of three couples committed to the Community. But in 2022, the Holy Spirit sparked a true awakening: new members made commitments, driven by a burning desire to once again offer a spiritual program for couples in the region.
Providentially, a first weekend was organized at the St. Ulrich retreat house in Hochaltingen, located on the border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Service was provided by couples from the Community and CANA Southern Germany, with Father Christophe Blin in attendance.
A Journey Through Past Joys and Wounds
This year marked the third edition of this CANA weekend, centered on the theme: “Family of Origin – Joy and Suffering.” Fourteen couples and thirteen children from across Germany participated. The group formed a wonderful mix of newlyweds and couples with over 25 years of marriage experience.
From the very first moments, a profound unity was felt among the participants. Together, they embarked on a sometimes painful journey: looking at their childhoods in the light of Jesus, recognizing and accepting their parents’ strengths and weaknesses, and taking steps toward forgiveness during a beautiful evening of reconciliation.
Transforming the Future with the Holy Spirit
Through teachings, prayer times, and couple sharing, spouses were able to journey together to better understand how their respective families of origin influence their own marriage today. The hosting team particularly admired the courage with which the couples fought this inner battle—always with Jesus and the Holy Spirit by their side.
The conclusion of this weekend resonates like a promise: we choose God and His gaze upon us, and we break free from the conditionings of the past. This is how the future is transformed.
“As for the team, we are immensely grateful to have been able to take part in this journey of grace.” > — Roswitha and Thomas Schwaiger, Ravensburg
